TANGO/DANCE AND FELDENKRAIS
I am teaching and DJ-ing a long weekend in Stockholm after coming from my winter house. A different culture, a different dance. The winter left us here as well, 2000 km up north, times are changing , the whole world is changing and we want tango to stay the same?!
-EVERYTHING IS A GIRO
-ALL IS AN EMBRACE
-TOGETHER THROUGH RHYTHM
-INTIMACY IS AN INTENTION
-TOGETHERNESS HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH DOING THE SAME THING
-THE HEART HAS ITS REASONS WHICH THE REASON MAY NOT UNDERSTAND
-MOVING TOWARDS COMPLEXITY
-COMING BACK TO THE I, THE ME AND THE YOU
-ARMS AND HANDS SPEAK MANY LANGUAGES, USE THEM!
-CRAWLING BRINGS TOGETHER ARMS AND LEGS, LEFT AND RIGHT, UP AND DOWN
-CHANGING WEIGHT IS AN EXPRESSION
-NO LEAVING WITHOUT ARRIVING FIRST
-ALL IS CONTRACTION AND EXPANSION
-ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE
-LEGS FOLLOW
-BE INTERESTED IN YOUR SURROUNDINGS, SEE, LISTEN AND SMELL
-LOVE YOUR HABITS AND HIGH-LIGHT THEM
-USE WHAT YOU WANNA GET RID OFF
-THE WAY TO BALANCE IS IN-BALANCE
-FALLING INTO YOUR STEPS
-ALL IS LISTENING
-WHO IS DANCING?
-USE YOUR HEAD MORE TO LOOSE IT
-MOVING IN AND OUT OF SHAPES
-ALL IS DISTANCE AND CLOSENESS
-I IS ALWAYS I AND YOU TOGETHER
-DON’T FOLLOW, DANCE
-ITS THE PELVIS, ELVIS
-ITS SO EASY
-LISTENING WITH YOUR EYES
-PLAYING IS KEY
-EARS CAN SEE
-WHY DO WE FOCUSE ON TOGETHERNESS IF ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE SEPARATE
-NOT OUR TECHNIQUE FAILS US BUT CLARITY IN OUR INTENSIONS
-NOT THE OTHER ONE IS OUR GOAL BUT OUR DREAMS AND OUR PATH, WE SIMPLY ASK THE OTHER ONE TO JOIN US, OR THEY ASK US, TO SHARE
-DONT FOLLOW STEPS BUT AN ATMOSPHERE, A WORLD
-DONT LEAD STEPS BUT LEAD A WORLD OF IMAGINATION
-DONT CREATE A FARM BUT CREATE A ZOO
Everyone of these quotes contains all the others.
Attending truly to one of them is attending to them all.
Life is always all-inclusive, separation is impossible, all we can do is not acknowledge what is there. Separation, exclusion, thinking we know best, our idea we can explain complex systems, creates a dissonance and tension between this what we do and what we think we do. Searching for the truth is simply making this what we do and this what we think we do, coincide, be the same.
There are no mistakes in the universe, only causes and results.
It’s never the other who makes us dance. We only can make ourselves dance.
Question everything! Is a quote on my girlfriends website. It has nothing to do with non believing, distrusting or to go against. It is actually the opposite, Question Everything! asks you to go into it fully, all the way. While in it question what it makes you do, think, feel and sense, what it can give YOU, help you, teach you.
Be curious, be alive and “In Touch”, meaning keep on touching and sensing all the time.
All my workshops start from one of these quotes but will always touch upon all the others as well. My goal is, while we learn the tango structure, Ocho’s, Vole’s, Saccada’s, Volcada’s, Tras-pied, etc, to bring it back to a human communication and interaction that connects technique to feelings, emotions, timing, story. A tango our bodies understand and can recognise that give us a natural feeling of grounding, centre, ease, balance, 3-dimensionality, creativity and openness. A tango that is truly ours and individual while at the same time touching the universal that makes it connect to all others.
Feldenkrais said, “better no teacher than a bad one”.
I am so grateful to mother nature that I don’t have to teach my 8 months old son the specifics of how to walk, speak, or learn about social interaction. I simply have to be there, engage with him, play, have fun and use some common sense.
“It’s so easy”, as the ventriloquist remarked in a ballet of Forsythe, if only we could trust the floor we stand upon and the bodies we live in more, and listen to what they have to say to us. Technique is an attempt to get a grip on life by isolating it to laboratory circumstances. But then how to bring it back to real living conditions.
“There is no wrong!”, I say in lessons. Everything when done whole-heartedly, is right, but might not be or serve the purpose one set out to do. Here often lies the problem. As a genius eight year old kid once remarked to me in our tennis game, “excellent shot and very good technique, had it only hit the ball.”
